Monsters are part of many good horror stories, and Lovecraft was the master of monsters. But a good monster needs depth and history while still maintaining horror and mystery. Lovecraft typically struck a good balance between the two, often-times only revealing bits and pieces about the nature of creatures he created in any given story.
